The City of Osborne (pop. 1431) is located in the rolling hills of north-central Kansas by the south fork of the Solomon River. Osborne is the county seat of Osborne County (pop. 3858) and sits at the intersection of U.S. Highways 24 & 281, which allows its residents easy access to travel in any direction. The city is located 45 minutes north of Interstate 70, and 90 minutes south of Interstate 80. Incorporated in 1879, Osborne is named for Captain Vincent B. Osborne, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Early pioneer settlers found the area’s fertile soils and extended growing season conducive for grain production, cattle ranching, and today, agriculture stills plays a major role in the economy of the community. Osborne is home to six industries that are engaged in manufacturing, transportation, and wholesale distribution.
The city maintains its own municipal power plant which means there are no extended power outages which is a plus for the business and industry of the community. Osborne is equipped with a state of the art fiber-optic system, which allows its citizens access to the latest computer technology and capabilities. The city also has a municipal airport with a 4,000+ feet paved runway.
Osborne is home to a wide variety of retail services. The available services would include hardware supplies, office supplies, major appliances, furniture, groceries, jewelry, auto supplies and repair, recreational equipment, farm supplies, computer repair, and many other agricultural-related businesses. These include grain elevators, seed companies, a veterinary clinic, chemical distributors, tractor repair, and welding. Osborne has its own hometown newspaper, and is also home for an automobile dealership, pharmacy, and eight restaurants and convenience stores.
